Announcing Expanded Historical Weather Data

We are excited to announce the expansion of our historical weather data database to include 7500 additional weather stations around the world. These additional weather stations will further expand our weather history data to provide more localized historical weather observations that are updated even more frequently.

Expanded Historical Weather Data for Germany

The new weather stations that we have added span the whole globe. We have also focused on providing a new dedicated set of weather observations in Germany, courtesy of DWD, the German Meteorological Department. These German weather stations now provide more accurate hourly observations throughout Germany by improving the density of weather stations for lookup.

In addition to higher weather station density, the additional weather stations provide a more complete and accurate picture of the weather observations within Germany. Many weather data providers rely on historical weather datasets that incorrectly report the rainfall and other precipitation for Germany (or completely omit rainfall records completely). The new weather station dataset ensures that the historical weather reports generated by Visual Crossing Weather Data are fully complete including full precipitation reporting.

Benefits of more weather stations

The global set of weather stations provide the hourly weather observations that form the Visual Crossing Weather Data historical weather data records. By expanding the number of weather stations available, the historical weather data provided by the Weather Data Services and Weather API will provide even more localized and up to date observations. More localized weather stations allow for a more accurate historical weather reports by ensuring the historical weather data variables such as temperature, precipitation and wind speed are sourced from as close a location as possible to the point of interest. Increased accuracy for historical weather data ensures that analysis of the weather data for patterns and trends will be more accurate by ensuring that the address-based weather data queries have more weather stations in close proximity. This is particularly important when recording localized weather events such as scatttered showers and thunderstorms where precipitation can vary over short distances. Closer weather reports also ensure that any localized impacts such as mountain ranges, urban areas and other biases are minimized.

Key Weather Data Features

Visual Crossing Weather Data provides weather data for analyzing The global historical weather data is the backbone of the system provide local historical hourly weather observations based on local weather stations. In addition to historical weather data, Visual Crossing Weather Data also provides 15-day hourly weather forecast throughout the world that can be used in conjunction with the weather history to provide a complete picture of the weather for multiple locations.

The free tier of the Weather API includes the core features of all our plans. These features include access to the Weather API, to be able to view and download weather data in the browser and also to easily integrate weather data into Microsoft ExcelGoogle Sheets, and other business and data analysis applications.

The Weather Data included with the free plan includes access to worldwide 15-day weather forecast and hourly historical data observations. These historical weather data records include temperature, rainfall, snowfall, wind and many other meteorological measurements. The historical weather data observations also form the basis for our Weather History Summary reports. These historical summary reports provide climate statistics for any location.

Getting started is free and easy

You can simply sign up for a free trial for the weather API at Weather Data Services. The weather data services page provides the ability to view weather datasets directly in the browser, download the weather data. In addition, the page will build the Weather API queries for you directly in the browser making it easy to get started with the API.
